FLUORITE on QUARTZ
Rogerley Mine, Dodgy Bugger Pocket (2006)
Weardale Mining District; Northern Pennines
Frosterley, County Durham, England, UK

Small Cabinet (7.9 x 5.9 x 3.5 cm)

This piece consists of bright emerald-green cubic fluorite crystals to 1.5 cm atop a gray limestone matrix. As is characteristic of many fluorites from this mine, most crystals are penetration twins, and exhibit a bright-blue daylight fluorescence when viewed in direct sunlight. These are also fluorescent bright blue under long wave UV light (see photos below). Matrix has been sawn flat on the back side. See Rocks and Minerals, Volume 75, Number 1 (2000), pages 54-61 for an excellent article about mining activities at this site.
