CALCITE in Mercenaria permagna Cabinet (10.5 x 8.8 x 5.5 cm) This is a nice fossil Mercenaria clam, with golden yellow calcite crystals up to 1 cm long in the upper hinge zone. Minor areas of drusy calcite occur elsewhere inside this specimen. The calcite is fluorescent blue-green under shortwave and longwave UV light (see photo), and even phosphoresces for a few seconds when the UV light is extinguished. These specimens are Plio–Pleistocene in age (1–2 million years old).
