This is a nice, single Mercenaria clam, with transparent golden yellow calcite crystals to over 1 cm long growing downward and adjacent to the upper hinge area of the clam. This specimen is also an outstanding fossil, with great shell detail. The calcite is fluorescent blue-green under shortwave and longwave UV light, and even phosphoresces for a few seconds when the UV light is extinguished. These specimens are Plio–Pleistocene in age (1–2 million years old).
