CALCITE in Mercenaria permagna
Rucks’ Pit, near Fort Drum;
Okeechobee County, Florida, USA

Cabinet (10.1 x 8.2 x 4.9 cm)

This unique specimen features an ark shell fossil (Anadara scapharca, 5.1 cm high and 3.0 cm across) attached to the top and inside half of a Mercenaria permagna fossil clam shell. The Anadara is completely replaced by honey-yellow calcite, and contains an open, crystal-filled cavity, unfortunately facing inward toward the host clam shell. There are two other smaller Anadara fossils attached, which are devoid of calcite crystals. The calcite is fluorescent blue-green under shortwave and longwave UV light, and even phosphoresces for a few seconds when the UV light is extinguished. These specimens are Plio–Pleistocene in age (1–2 million years old).
