CALCITE on Mercenaria permagna
Rucks’ Pit, near Fort Drum; Okeechobee County, Florida, USA

Large Cabinet (18.8 x 12.2 x 9.4 cm)

This is a spectacular top-shelf dual matrix specimen consisting of a pair of transparent golden calcite-filled Mercenaria permagna clams in parallel matrix orientation. The calcite crystals are up to 2 cm long, and are concentrated in the upper hinge area of each clam. The calcite is fluorescent blue-green under shortwave and longwave UV light (see photo), and even phosphoresces for a few seconds when the UV light is extinguished. These specimens are Plio–Pleistocene in age (1–2 million years old).
