CALCITE on Mercenaria permagna

This is a spectacular dual clam specimen, containing two adjacent complete Mercenaria permagna fossils in gray micritic limestone matrix, with transparent honey-yellow dogtooth calcite crystals to over 3 cm long growing within the “hinge” area of each clam. Multi-clam matrix specimens of this quality are very rare. The calcite is fluorescent blue-green under shortwave and longwave UV light (see photo), and even phosphoresces for a few seconds when the UV light is extinguished. These specimens are Plio–Pleistocene in age (1–2 million years old).
