QUARTZ var.
CHALCEDONY (Agatized Coral) Small Cabinet – Matched Pair (7.9 x 4.9 x 2.0 cm & 6.9 x 4.5 x 2.0 cm) This is a nice representative specimen of agatized coral from the famed Ballast Point area within the City of Tampa. The specimen consists of translucent tea-colored chalcedony, with a drusy quartz interior mostly over-coated with white common opal. The fossil details of the coral are evident on the outside of the piece, as seen in the accompanying photo. Fluorescent yellow under longwave and shortwave UV light. Collected in 1971 from the dug-up back yard of Carl Anderson. This area is now built over with exclusive residences, and it is very unlikely that additional significant excavations will occur here. Collected from the Tampa Member of the Arcadia Formation, Hawthorn Group (lower Miocene). Sold as a polished, matched pair. Return to agatized coral home page |
